As a Certified Government Financial Manager, Verdenia is responsible for the management of activities necessary to insure the efficient and effective operation of county government with a budget of approximately $4 billion, 6,300+ employees and a population of approximately 1.3 million. In 1987, Verdenia began her career with Palm Beach County as a Budget Analyst; she then was promoted to Impact Fee Coordinator and eventually became the division director of the County’s Financial Management Department. Her experience as a financial manager was a prelude to her current day responsibilities as Deputy County Administrator and second in command of county government.
Today, Verdenia oversees the daily management of county departments and agencies funded by the Board of County Commissioners. She served as County Administration’s liaison on the successful recruitment of The Scripps Research Institute. In addition, she is responsible for the Mandatory Inclusionary Workforce Housing Program as well as the Growth Tiered System for the County. She was responsible for Redistricting of County Commission Districts in 2000 and 2010. Verdenia collaborates daily with representatives of other jurisdictions, developers, private industry, civic and community organizations on issues of interest pertaining to county business. Fiduciary responsibilities remain on the top of her agenda as she reviews and recommends departmental and agency budgets to the County Administrator and the Board of County Commissioners. Additionally, Verdenia handles all assigned special projects and programs as directed by the County Administrator and responds to all requests of the County Commission.
Verdenia holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Rehabilitative Services, a Master of Science Degree in Public Administration, both from Florida State University and is a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.- WPB Chapter. She has affiliation with several professional and community organizations including serving as the 1St Vice President of the Executive Board of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA) former National 2nd VP and Secretary/Treasurer of the Executive Board of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA); Former President of American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) Treasure Coast Chapter; Member of the Board of Directors of Black Chamber of Commerce; Member of the Board of Directors of St. Mary’s Hospital; Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Member of Deaconess Ministry and Youth Ministry of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church; Mentor for the Women of Tomorrow Mentor Program and Former Member of the Board of Directors of the Business Loan Fund of the Palm Beaches; Former member of the Band Parent Association of Suncoast High School. She has received numerous local and national professional and civic awards.
Verdenia lives in Royal Palm Beach with her husband, Joe and daughter Jasmin.Verdenia Baker
